Cytology is the examination and study of blood or tissue cells under a microscope that can be done in dogs and other animals.
What is a cytology test for a dog?
Ovulation cytology is the test most commonly used to confirm when a bitch is ovulating. A sterile cotton swab is inserted into the vagina carefully availing the vestibule. This doesn’t harm the dog in any way. The cranial vagina walls easily exfoliates the cells onto the swab. Once the cells are collected they are then transferred onto a glass microscope slide. The slide is then allowed to dry for 1-2 minutes. Dye is then added and the cells are put under the microscope where they can be analysed for signs of ovulation, infection or abnormal seasons.
